Sinusitis
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses.
It may or may not be due to either bacterial, fungal, viral infection, or to an allergic, or autoimmune reaction.Yet, it may occur as a part of another upper respiratory tract disease, anis ofetn linked to asthma.
The disease is classified according to location and duration.
According to location, there are 4 types of sinusitis:
- Maxillary, it features pain/pressure in the cheeck area causing toothache or headache
- Frontal, it features pain/pressure in the area above eyes
- Ethmoid, it features pain/pressure in the area between eyes
- Sphenoid, it features pain/pressure in the area behind eyes
According to duration, sinusitis can be considered:
- Acute: it lasts for less than 4 weeks and usually caused by a viral, bacterial, and/or fungal infection
- Subacute: it may last 4-12 weeks
- Chronic: it lasts for more than 12 weeks and has multifactiorial causes including allergy, environmental factors, bacterial or fungal infections, or even an abnormally narrow sinus passage. It may feature nasal congestion, headache, fever, aching teeth, facial pain, etc.
