Prostate (enlarged)

The prostate is a walnut-like shaped bladder, where urhetra meets the two ejaculatory tubes.

The prostate may be affected by some diseases, such as:

  • Prostatitis, i.e. inflammation
  • Benign prostatic hypertrophy, i.e. benign tumor
  • Adenocarcinoma, i.e. malign tumor

The benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is the most common disorder that affects the prostate. The enlargement of the prostate affects most likely men over the age of 50-60 years old, and the natural ageing process should probably be accounted for this disorder.
Although the real causes are unknown, the change in hormone levels does play a main role in the prostate enlargement. During male climacteric, the increasing in oestrogen levels raises the risk to develop hypertrophy, since the prostate has several oestrogen receptors.

The main signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy include:
  • difficult urination or, in the most severe cases, urinary retention
  • need for urinate more often
  • nocturia
  • urgency to urinate
  • intermittent urination
