Candida albicans

Candida albicans is a diploid asexual fungus (a form of yeast), and a causal agent of opportunistic oral and genital infections in humans.

Under normal circumstances, Candida albicans is among the gut flora, the many organisms that live in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract. It has no harmful effects, although overgrowth results in candidiasis.

In its pathologic form it's a parasitic.
When debility and immunodepression occur to a body, or after a long-time treatment with antibiotics, Candida grows abnormally, and it can reach blood stream through gut. So, abdominal swelling, sluggish digestion, intestinal disorders (constipation or diarrhea), food allergy, weakness, nervousness, memory loss, headache, and depression can occur.
In individuals with immunodeficiency candida can reach esophagus and become chronic.

In patiens without impaired immune functions candida generally affects exposed and wet body parts, such as:

  • oral cavity
  • vagina
  • folds in the skin covered by diaper

Candida infection occurs more often to women because of fungi migration from gut to vagina. This usually happens during pregnancy, that is when vaginal pH value is high and many starchy are eaten.
The infection is very contagious from woman to man, but not from man to woman.
The infection occurs to women with witish losses,  burning (continuous or just after urinating), and vaginal sore. In men Candida causes reddish and itchy spots.
Candidiasis doesn't impair pregnancy, but if there are Candida fungi in prostatic liquid when conceived, there could be the risk of baby's urogenital deformities formation.

Candida is such a strong attack against immune system, that it paves the way to many pathologies, cancer included.

Thinking about intestinal and skin functions, it becomes clear how Candida can accounted for food allergies. There's such a tight bound among bowel, immune system, endocrine system, and nervous system, that Candida can cause symptoms like depression, pre-menstrual syndrome, alopecia, insomnia, impotency, digestive disorders, allergies, dermatitis, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, etc.
Due to this tight bound, Candida is often hard to diagnose.
The usual symptoms that diagnose candidiasis are:

  • constipation and/ or diarrhea
  • food allergy
  • menstrual disorders
  • chronic fatigue syndrome
  • sore throat
  • loosing teeth
  • blurred sight
  • burning when urinating
  • frequent headaches
  • nasal itching
  • backache
  • behavioural disorders
  • depression and anxiety

There are many possible causes of candidiasis, including dysbiosis (an impairement of bacterial flora within gut), immune system impairement (antibiotics, vaccines, impairing diseases, heavy metals, environmental pollution, etc.), parental contagion, and stress.
In every case, it occurs an impairement of immune system.
Recurring candidiasis is common in people with impaired immune system, and it can become chronic as immune disorder worsens. An unexplainable and drug resistant vaginal candidiasis is often the only clue to a severe immuno deficiency.

Candidiasis can show up either after an antibiotic or cortisone treatment, in diabetic patients, when using oral contaceptives, when drugs for nervous system (like tranquillizers or sleeping pills) are intaken, during pregnancy, or if anti-ulcerous drugs are taken.
Antibiotic treatment, especially when prolonged, can lead to an impairement of the balance of organisms that do live in our body. Indeed, antibiotics can lead to the die off of intestinal bacterial flora that usually blocks Candida growth. Bacterial flora weakened by antibiotics cannot produce vitamin B, that also keeps the right level of acidity; so that, intestinal walls result damaged, and fungi and slag can leak into bloodstream and lead to toxic and allergic reactions.

Another leading factor of Candida growth is the diet, 'cos fungi feed themselves mainly with carbohydrates. One of the distinctive symptoms of candida infection is the greediness for bread, potatoes, pizza, pasta, sweets, and sugar.

Additionally, Candida treatment should often associated to allergy and/or other parasites treatments.
Many of the pathologies usually stress and anxiety  are accounted for (such as gastritis, irritable bowel syndorme, constipation, and diarrhea) are actually due to Candida pathology within small intestine tract.

Since about 20 years now, it's also known that some skin disorders, such as psoriasis and dermatitis seborrheica, are strictly linked to candidiasis.

Treatment

Since candidiasis is often diagnosed thanks to whitish losses proper to vaginitis, the usual treatment calls for topical therapies with antifungal pessaries and pomades, and oral antifungal drugs for most severe cases.

With traditional treatments, nutritional supplements can be taken, such as those with:
  • Herbs: bellaco-capsi, jatoba, pau d'arco, clavillia, anamu, fedegoso, brazilian peppertree, graviola, sangre de grado, andiroba (topico), copaiba (topico), mulateiro (topico), guaco, guava
  • Colloidal silver

Yet, it's clear that candidiasis is due to an impairement of bowel and immune system. So, with topical and local treatments, it's advisable a global treatment on several levels.
  1. Diet: it's advisable to avoid rised food (bread, pizza, etc.), sugars (sweets, sugar, pasta, unrised bread), potatoes, sodas, alchoholics, some fruits (like citrus, dried fruit), coffee, chocolate, food coloring, and preservatives. You can eat sparingly wholemeal pasta and rice, meat twice a week, and fish three times weekly. It's recommended not to eat fruits at the end of the meals, but at least 1 hour before or three after meals, in order to avoid that sugars and carbohydrates ferment together. It's also strongly advise to take nutritional supplements make bacterial flora normal, such as milk enzymes contained in yoghurt. But keep attention: yoghurts with fruits have to be avoided, because of their sugar content.
  2. Detoxification: it's necessary to detoxify bowel, liver, and pancreas with nutritional supplements that absorbe toxins produced by Candida and help a better digestion
  3. Digestion: it's advisable to take nutritional supplements to help restoring intestinal digestive function and reducing inflammation.
