Passionflower belongs to the family Passifloraceae. It's a perennial climbing vine that can grow up to 10m.
The name “Passionflower” is linked to the Christ's passion on the cross symbolism and has been given by Christian missionaries because of the physical structures of the flower that recalls the crown of Thorns and other symbols linked to Christ's Passion.
Passionflower is native of North America, but it grows throughout Europe too.
Passionflower has been long used among Native Americans in North Maerica for several medical purposes, such as for insomnia, hysteria, epilepsy, anxiety, and pain.
