Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronan (also called hyaluronic acid or hyaluronate) is a non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial, and neural tissues. It is one of the chief components of the extracellular matrix, contributes significantly to cell proliferation and migration.

Scientific research suggests that Hyaluronic Acid may be able to hold more water than any other natural substance.

The main functions of hyaluroanan are th following:

  • it keeps tissues elasticity and shape
  • it filters out bacteria and other infective agents; it blocks infective agents off spreading freely throughout the tissue

It's found in major concentration in:
  • articular cartilage, as a coat around each cell (chondrocyte).
  • skin, where it acts as a main agent in tissue repair

It was first discovered in 1934, but it became popular thanks to an ABC news report on a Japanese village. The report showed that 10% of people above 85 years old had still flexible and healthy joints. It was discovered that those people used to eat a lot of sweet potatoes and vegetables, i.e. the key nutrients for hyaluronic acid synthesis. Indeed, high levels of hyaluronic acid were found in their body.

Since, hyaluronan is naturally found in many tissues of the body (such as skin, cartilage, and the vitreous humor), it has several biomedical applications. It's approved indeed for use in eye surgery, to treat osteoarthritis of the knee, ankle, and shoulder, , to monitor and as tumor marker for prostate and breast cancer,

Moreover, Hyaluronan is a common ingredient in skin care products.
