DMAE

DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) is a natural occurring substance in the body that facilitates the synthesis of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine.
Acetylcholine, a synthesized product of choline, is involved in higher brain functions such as learning, recall, and memory. Animal studies show that taking DMAE can boost levels of choline in the brain, which in turn increases the body’s ability to produce acetylcholine, resulting in a corresponding increase in memory ability and potency.

DMAE is found in high levels in sardines and anchovies, but small amounts of it are also produced naturally in the human brain.

Supplements of DMAE has been prescribed for many years as a treatment for cognitive disorders. A prescription form of DMAE was already in use in the 1960s and 1970s for the treatment of learning and behavioral problems associated with shortened attention span.

DMAE has recently become a popular skin-firming ingredient and has been advertized as a “face lift in a jar”.

As we age, the muscle fibers under the skin lengthen and loosen. Skin sags and becomes thinner.

Recently, studies have been performed on a gel formulation containing DMAE. It has been documented an increasing in skin tautness, even in younger people. The tests have been conducted on thirty individuals between the ages of 36 and 49, and measured changes in skin firmness after application with the DMAE gel compared to placebo. The tests showed that the placebo had little to none effect, wheras the DMAE-treated skin resulted firmer.

DMAE's mechanisms of action are still unknown. One hypothesis about how DMAE works suggests that DMAE improves skin firmness by stimulating muscle contraction. Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter responsible for sending messages between nerves cells and muscles. Increasing levels of DMAE may increase the level of acetylcholine and lead to increased muscle contraction. Increased muscle contraction shortens the muscle fibers and tightens skin. Another possible mechanism is that DMAE may enhance water retention in connective skin tissue, causing the surface of the skin to tighten.

DMAE has been shown effective for age spots either. Age spots are caused by an accumulation of lipofuscin – the brown cellular pigment – into cells. Thanks to its membrane-stabilizing properties, DMAE helps reducing the accumulation of lipofuscin deposits inside cells by flushings excess from affected skin cells.

DMAE has also been documented with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Antioxidant substances protect the cell structures from free radical damage, slowing the aging process and preventing the formation of lines and wrinkles. Anti-inflammatory agents soothe skin, keeping it healthy and radiant.
