Aloe is native of Africa, but nowadays it can be found all over the world.
More than 240 soecies are known, yet just forur species have demonstrated a nutritive value. The most powerful is Aloe Bardensis Miller (aka Aloe Vera) that contains serveral aminoacids, enzymes, minerals and vitamins.
Aloe has a long hystory of use for medical and nutritive purposes. Among Ancient Egyptians and Greeks it was used as a wound healer and for skin infections. In U.S. it was first used as laxative, and later on for burns, skin ulcers, and sores.
Aloe can be useful for many disorders. It has been scientifically demonstrated that it helps wounds and burns healing process, by help increasing collagen synthesis. Its antinflammatory, immunoprotective, immunostimulant, and antiviral properties are also well known.
A double-blind placebo study was performed to test an Aloe cream efficacy and tolerability on 60 psoriasic patients. A cream containing 0,5% of aloe extract was applied three times a day, 5 days a week for 12 months. Twenty-five on thirty patiens who had been given Aloe cream showed an improvement in their conditions, and all the patients of the group showed no side effects. Just two patients of the palcebo group showed an improvement in their skin conditions.
Another study has reported that a local application of an aloe bardensis gel can help balancing immune answers, so that it can help preventing immune system suppression due to UV rays.
It's also been demonstrated that aloe can increase phagocytosis (i.e. the depletion of foreign cells by macrophages) up to 98%. In the very same study, aloe's antiviral properties against herpes simplex I and II, varicellavirus, influenza, adenovirus, and rhinovirus has been tested. The test reported that aloe was effective on all the viruses but adenovirus and rhinovirus.
Several studies have reported an anti-cancer properties of an extract if aloe combined with Vitamin C or Vitamin E. The aloe extract have shown the ability to slow down tumor development.
